Van Nuys Car Dealerships Hiring Despite Recession
VAN NUYS (CBS) —
Galpin is hiring new workers in the middle of the recession.
While bankruptcy rumors are swirling around about GM and Chrysler -- which is about to shutter 789 dealerships across the country -- Ford and other dealerships appear to be hiring more workers. At least here in the San Fernando Valley.
Galpin Ford, Jaguar-Lincoln-Volvo, Mazda and Honda in Van Nuys are hiring new workers at a time when many other dealerships are fearful they will be told to shut their doors for good.

FORD FUSION HYBRID TOPS CAMRY, PRIUS IN COMPARISONS
Courtesy U.S. News & World Report Rankings & Reviews
If you're in the market for an ultra fuel-efficient hybrid that makes a convincing family sedan, your best choice has always been a Toyota -- until now. Toyota's Camry Hybrid and Prius have been the only realistic alternatives for many. Most American-built hybrids simply haven't matched their fuel economy, and the Nissan Altima Hybrid remains rare and hard to find.
A new entrant in the contest, however, may have knocked the Toyotas from their lofty perch.
The automotive press has begun testing the all-new 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid in recent weeks. Two prominent publications have now published comparisons pitting the Fusion Hybrid against its Toyota competition, and the Ford has won both.
USA Today writes: "OK, let's just get it out there: The 2010 Ford Fusion hybrid is the best gasoline-electric hybrid yet. What makes it best is a top-drawer blend of an already very good midsize sedan with the industry's smoothest, best-integrated gas-electric power system. It's so well-done that you have to look to the $107,000 Lexus LS 600h hybrid to come close."
"The Toyota Prius crowd will protest," they note, but USA Today says Ford's car simply drives better. "A car is, after all, a driving machine. Brownie points for saving somewhat more fuel or offering a cargo-friendly hatchback, but driving feel is most important. And there, Fusion is without equal among hybrids."
Car and Driver set the Fusion against the Camry Hybrid, Chevy Malibu Hybrid and Altima Hybrid, but the result was the same. "Ford has pulled off a game changer with this 2010 model, creating a high-mpg family hauler that's fun to drive," they write. "Nothing about the leather-lined test car, optioned up from its $27,995 base price to $32,555, seemed economy minded except for the mileage readings. On that score, the Fusion topped the others, turning in a 34-mpg score card for the overall 300-mile test run."
In our time behind the wheel of the Fusion Hybrid, we quickly came to a similar verdict. The Fusion Hybrid corners with as much agility as its conventionally-powered cousin - one of the best-handling cars in the midsize class. With standard SYNC technology, it allows the driver to control Bluetooth-enabled phones and music players through the car's speakers with voice commands. And its standard leather and high-quality stereo give it an upscale feel for an affordable price. Ford has a hit on its hands.
We had one minor complaint. Ford's SmartGuage instrument cluster does a great job coaching the driver to drive more efficiently with information-rich displays, but the cutesy display that grows leaves as the driver reaches peak efficiency is distracting and can draw your eyes from the road. Still, following the device's prompts, we hit 37.7 mpg in city driving on the first try.
The Fusion Hybrid qualifies for a federal tax credit of $3,400 until the end of March, but few of the cars will reach dealerships by then - if you're in the market, you might want to consider ordering yours before the credit disappears.

FORD CELEBRATES SALES BOOST IN EUROPE'S TOP TWO MARKETS
By: John Revill Courtesy: Automotive News Europe
Ford Motor's sales grew significantly in Europe's two biggest markets in March, boosted by scrappage incentives.
In Germany, Europe's No. 1 market, Ford's sales increased by 39.6 percent to 28,300 last month compared with the same month in 2008. In Italy, Europe's second largest market, Ford's sales were up 21.7 percent to 23,800.
Both countries offer car buyers incentives to scrap old cars for new, more fuel-efficient models.
In the United Kingdom, which so far has not agreed on a scrappage incentive, Ford's sales fell by 21,100 to 62,300 in March.
Scrappage bonuses in European markets also including France and Spain helped to boost sales of the Fiesta small car and Ka minicar.
The Fiesta had its best sales month in Germany in March since 1998. The Ka had its best month since 2002.
The Fiesta was Ford's biggest seller across Europe with 52,800 sold in March, bringing sales since the car was launched in the autumn to almost 170,000.
Ingvar Sviggum, Ford of Europe's head of sales and marketing, said: “It is very encouraging to see Fiesta doing so well and also our market share developing so positively, given the declining market we are continuing to face in Europe.”
Ford said it increased market share in its main 19 European markets by 0.2 percentage points to 10 percent in March, consolidating its position as Europe's second best-selling brand.
This is the first time Ford of Europe's market share has been in double digits since September 2001, Ford said.
Sviggum said 56 percent of March sales were generated by retail customers up from 43 percent in March 2008.
Last month, Ford was the top-selling foreign brand in Russia for the first time since March 2007 despite its sales falling 6,700 to 11,100.
Across all its 51 European markets, Ford sold 185,100 vehicles in March, down 16.3 percent or 36,000 compared to the same month last year.
Ford's March sales fell 13 percent to 163,000 in its 19 main European markets.

STUDY: FORD SURPASSES HONDA IN INITIAL QUALITY
Courtesy: Ford Motor Company
DEARBORN, Mich., April 17 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Ford Motor Company, continuing its rapid quality improvement, surpassed Honda in initial vehicle quality for the first time and reached new levels of customer satisfaction with vehicle quality, a new survey shows.
Ford is also statistically tied with Toyota at the top of the industry when it comes to initial vehicle quality, according to the 2009 U.S. Global Quality Research System (GQRS) survey conducted quarterly for Ford by RDA Group of Bloomfield Hills, Mich.
"This is truly a significant accomplishment for us," said Bennie Fowler, Ford group vice president, Global Quality. "Honda and Toyota have claimed bragging rights for years, but now we are seeing our hard work pay off. It's evident in study after study."
The latest GQRS survey measured 2009 model year vehicle initial quality in two categories: the number of "things gone wrong," and customer satisfaction with vehicle quality in the first three months of ownership.
In the first quarter of 2009, Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles saw things gone wrong fall by 5 percent to 1,228 per 1,000 vehicles, significantly better than Honda's 1,422 things gone wrong per 1,000 vehicles and statistically equal to Toyota's 1,150.
In addition, the survey shows that Ford Lincoln Mercury improved two percentage points to 79 percent in customer satisfaction with vehicle quality, which puts Ford's domestic brands in a tie with Toyota and Honda for industry leadership.
"Ford's commitment to quality is really paying off as they continue to rival Honda and Toyota on both initial quality and customer satisfaction with the quality," said Donald Pietrowski, president, RDA Group.
The following models led their respective segments in the survey:
* Ford Mustang - initial quality and customer satisfaction for sports cars
* Ford Taurus - initial quality for large cars
* Ford Taurus X - initial quality for crossover utilities
* Mercury Milan - initial quality for midsize cars
* Ford Ranger - initial quality for compact pickups
The new 2009 Ford F-150 recorded quality levels that equate to less than one problem per vehicle, as did the Taurus, Taurus X, Fusion, Milan, and Edge.
"We are energized by the continuous improvement we are seeing on both initial vehicle quality and customer satisfaction," said Fowler. "This survey validates the hard work and dedication to quality from Ford employees, suppliers and dealers. We will keep the momentum going as we strive to become the clear global quality leader."
The GQRS study is conducted on a quarterly basis with scores assessed from survey responses collected from owners of vehicles purchased within specific short-term time frames.
New vehicle owners are asked to report any defects or issues as well as rate their satisfaction with vehicle quality on a scale of 1 to 10 across an array of vehicle systems and features.

FORD SOARS ON DEBT RESTRUCTURING
Courtesy by Anthony Mirhaydari • www.moneycentral.msn.com
Ford (F) announced that it has done what General Motors (GM) and Chrysler have failed to do: Lighten its debt burden.
Using $2.4 billion in cash and 468 million shares of stock, Ford will cut its $26 billion debt load by nearly $10 billion -- saving more than $500 million in interest expense each year. This brings Ford's total debt reduction efforts to more than two-thirds of its unsecured debt. Because of these efforts, Ford's shares were up almost 16% during trading on Monday.
The largest concern for Ford has been its dwindling cash reserve. Currently, the company's cash burn rate is nearly $4 billion per quarter -- a majority of which is being spent on the working capital needed to keep factories operating. That means Ford, based on the work of Barclays Capital analyst Brian Johnson, now has about $19 billion left in the bank. Will this be enough to survive until sales return to more normal levels?
The short answer is probably. Sales were up on a month-to-month basis in March as efforts to unfreeze the auto credit market started to bear fruit: Ford Motor Credit submitted $2.95 billion in securitized auto loans to the Federal Reserve's new Term Asset-backed Securities Loan Facility, or TALF. This will help buyers of Ford products receive more attractive financing terms. The Obama administration's recent commitment to back the warranties of GM and Chrysler vehicles will add another positive boost to industry sales. Also, Ford and GM are both offering payment protection to buyers threatened by job loss.
Assuming domestic auto sales continue to rise from unsustainably low levels, and Ford continues to steal market share from its embattled Detroit rivals, I see Ford ending the year with around $12 billion. After a $2 billion debt repayment due in January, Ford will be very near the $10 billion minimum that it needs to fund day-to-day operations. This means some form of government support is still well within the realm of possibility.
But even if it needs to ask for bridge loan assistance, Ford is now much further along in its restructuring efforts, continues to benefit from negotiations to reduce labor costs, has a solid management team, and benefits from a very desirable pipeline of new products. Check out the new Fusion hybrid, Fiesta and Taurus SHO. These are exactly the type of products Americans want to drive, especially with fuel prices on the rise again as the threat of inflation and newfound optimism about the economy drive crude oil higher. Once the recovery begins, Ford will be the best positioned of all America's automakers to fight off foreign competitors and prove that Detroit can be competitive outside of its truck products.

2010 FORD FUSION: AMERICA’S MOST FUEL EFFICIENT MID-SIZE SEDAN OFFERS BEST VALUE, STARTS UNDER $20,000
By: Rex Roy Courtesy: thecarconnection.com
* Base price of $19,995, including delivery and destination (D&D), offers best-in-class fuel economy of 34 mpg highway for new 2.5-liter I-4 engine, bold styling and smart technologies
* Hybrid model starts at $27,995, including D&D, offers best-in-class fuel economy of 41 mpg city, 36 highway, besting Toyota Camry Hybrid by 8 mpg city, 2 mpg highway
* 2010 Mercury Milan starts at $21,905; Milan Hybrid starts at $31,300, including D&D
* Fusion and Milan Hybrid models qualify for the highest available federal tax credit of $3,400
DEARBORN, Mich., March 2, 2009 – The new 2010 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan, America’s most fuel-efficient mid-size sedans, offer the best value in their segment with starting prices of $19,995 and $21,905, including delivery and destination, respectively.
The gas engine-powered and hybrid-electric models leapfrog the competition in every area that counts: fuel economy, power, technology and overall value.
“We’ve priced Fusion to beat the competition as is does in every area that matters most to customers,” said Chantel Lenard, Ford group marketing manager, Global Small and Medium Cars. “This vehicle does more than compete; it aggressively positions Ford to take back its share of the mid-size car segment and sets the tone for the upcoming Taurus and Fiesta launches.”
Dollars and Sense
The front-wheel-drive Fusion S, with a new fuel-efficient 2.5-liter I-4 engine, has a base price (including $725 destination and delivery) of $19,995; the SE trim level is $20,545; the SEL is $23,975. An optional 3.0-liter V-6 engine also is available on SE and SEL models.
Performance-minded buyers can opt for the Fusion Sport equipped with a new 3.5-liter V-6 engine that produces 263 horsepower and 249 ft.-lb. of torque. Fusion Sport FWD starts at $25,825; AWD at $27,675.
The Mercury Milan ranges from $21,180 (including destination and delivery) for the FWD model with the I-4 engine and six-speed automatic transmission, to $27,800 for the well-equipped Milan Premier AWD model with a fuel-efficient 3.0-liter V-6 engine.
Fusion and Milan’s value is further bolstered by stronger residual values. According to Automotive Leasing Guide (ALG), a California-based consulting and data-gathering firm, the base 2010 Fusion is projected to retain 50 percent of its original value at the end of a conventional three-year lease term. That’s a six-point increase overall since the Fusion launched for the 2006 model year.
More Value: Tax Credits for Hybrids
Fusion and Milan deliver class-leading fuel economy of 41 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway. Fusion Hybrid has a base price of $27,995 (including destination and delivery), which is less than a $3,300 price differential for a similarly equipped Fusion gas-engine powered I-4 SEL model. Meanwhile, the well-equipped Milan Hybrid is priced at $31,300.
For added savings, customers who purchase a new Fusion or Milan Hybrid by March 31, 2009, may qualify for a $3,400 tax credit on their 2009 federal income tax return. This is the highest hybrid credit available. Between April 1, 2009, and Sept. 30, 2009, customers who purchase a 2010 Fusion or Milan Hybrid are eligible for a partial credit of $1,700. Between Oct. 1, 2009, and March 31, 2010, an $850 credit applies.
Meanwhile, competing hybrid sedans from Toyota and Honda no longer are eligible for tax credits.
Initial demand for the Fusion and Milan Hybrid is strong with nearly 80 percent of early retail orders being hybrids.
Steeped in Quality
Fusion and Milan have unsurpassed quality, ranking better than Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and Nissan Altima for initial quality, according to Global Quality Research System (GQRS) survey data from 2008.
In early drive reviews, consumer publications have begun touting the 2010 Fusion and Milan Hybrid models as the new industry benchmark: “Fusion is without equal among hybrids,” wrote USA Today, Feb. 5, 2009.

2009 FORD F-150: NORTH AMERICAN TRUCK OF THE YEAR
• The all-new Ford F-150 is named North American Truck of the Year at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS)
• Since its launch in October, 2008, the all-new F-150 has earned many awards and accolades, including 2009 Motor Trend Truck of the Year™
• The 2009 F-150 also America’s safest full-size pickup
DETROIT, Jan. 11, 2009 – The all-new 2009 Ford F-150, America’s best-selling vehicle, was named North American Truck of the Year today at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. The prestigious award comes hot on the heels of the 2009 F-150 being named 2009 Motor Trend Truck of the Year™ and the “Truck of Texas” by the Texas Auto Writers Association in addition to a number of other awards and accolades. “Winning 2009 North America Truck of the Year honors is a special distinction because it acknowledges the team’s efforts to push harder and deliver even more for customers – including quality, safety leadership, unsurpassed fuel economy and smart features aimed at further improving their productivity,” said Mark Fields, Ford’s president of The Americas. “Ultimately, though, this award is a nod to true truck customers, who have inspired us to deliver America’s favorite pickup for 32 straight years.”
The North American Truck of the Year award recognizes vehicles based on factors including innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value for the dollar. Fifty automotive journalists in the United States and Canada vote for the vehicles, which must be “all-new” or “substantially changed” from the previous model to qualify for the award. The 2009 F-150 is new inside and out. The Ford truck team adopted a holistic, 360-degree approach to revamping the vehicle – from its segment-first features to the tough new exterior highlighted by a dramatic three-bar grille and more spacious, flexible and refined interior, to the unparalleled choice of cab styles and trim levels. The improvements are just as dramatic beneath the sheet metal. They include a new high-strength, lighter-weight chassis that delivers even more horsepower, unsurpassed fuel economy and class-leading towing and payload capacity.
“We know how important the F-150 is to our customers and their livelihood,” said Derrick Kuzak, Ford’s group vice president of Global Product Development. “That’s why our team has been working so hard to deliver the most capability, improve fuel economy and ensure that this F-150 lives up to the durability and reliability expected of a ‘Built Ford Tough’ truck.
“Ford has spent years listening to our truck customers, and as the truck leader, we take our responsibility to deliver the right tools for them very seriously – and winning North American Truck of the Year is yet another assurance that the team absolutely delivered the best full-size pickup in America,” Kuzak continued.
For the 32nd year in a row, Ford’s award-winning F-Series is America’s best-selling truck with 2008 sales of 515,513.
For the 27th year in a row, F-Series is once again America’s best-selling vehicle of any type – car, crossover, SUV, truck or van.
Last week, the F-150 earned the title of America’s safest full-size pickup when it received 5-star frontal- and 5-star side-impact crash test ratings, the highest possible scores from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Earlier last fall, the truck received the “Top Safety Pick” award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
The new 2009 F-150 also sports an array of smart technologies – from industry-first SYNC to Ford Work Solutions. SYNC provides hands-free, in-car communication. Ford Work Solutions is an innovative suite of options, including an in-dash computer with Internet access, Tool Link to track tools, Crew Chief technology to dispatch workers and reduce vehicle operating costs and Cable Lock to improve security of tools and equipment.
The new F-150 delivers class-leading towing capability of 11,300 pounds and hauling capacity of 3,030 pounds – a combination no other competitor can match. For 2009, F-150 also has improved its fuel economy by an average of 8 percent across the entire lineup, thanks to a wide range engineering enhancements. The fuel economy gains reach as high as 12 percent versus the prior model year on F-150 models equipped with the high-volume, three-valve, 5.4-liter V-8 engine. Plus, the F-150’s SFE package – which is available on highest-volume XL and XLT series – delivers unsurpassed fuel economy of 15 mpg city and 21 mpg highway.
The new 2009 F-150, which is built at Ford’s Dearborn (Mich.) Truck Plant and Kansas City Assembly Plant, has also won the following awards and accolades:
• America’s safest full-size pickup with 5-star frontal and 5-star side-impact crash-test ratings, the highest possible scores, in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests.
• Motor Trend 2009 Truck of the Year Award™
• Top honors as “Truck of Texas” as well as “Best Luxury Pickup” for the 2009 F-150 King Ranch from Texas Auto Writers Association

Road Test of the Ford Fiesta, sorta, on the streets of New York
Courtesy: Examiner.com
The Ford Fiesta has been touted as, among other things, a city car. Thanks to its compact dimensions, it is said it’s capable of easily navigating urban traffic. So when we were offered the opportunity to drive a Fiesta—not due here until summer, 2010—in Manhattan during the New York Auto Show press days, we got behind the wheel as soon as we could.
Did we say urban traffic? Within a tenth of a mile—from in front of the Javitts Center on 11th Avenue and a right turn onto W. 34th—we were stopped dead in the water. Well, not completely. After about four cycles of the traffic light—also known as a stoplight for good reason—we were able to turn the Ford Fiesta right onto the Westside Highway and up to about ten miles per hour for about five seconds, if that.
Ford FiestaSo far we’ve learned that the brakes work well, if a bit touchy on our test car. We had wanted to drive a manual transmission-equipped Fiesta because that’s just the way we are. Besides, the car with the stick had a relatively large 1.6-liter engine. That’s relative to our automatic which had all of 1.4-liters worth of motivation. The 1.6 wasn’t available at the moment, however, so we were stuck with the automatic.
Lucky us. Really. It didn’t matter that the 1.4 was rated at only 96 horsepower. We could have put most of the ponies on furlough. Fuel mileage—the Fiesta 1.4 automatic has an EU rating of 31.7/55.3/43.5 (urban/extra-urban/combined)--was becoming moot. Fuel per hours of operation would have been more like it.
In fits and starts we made our way northward. At least the driver’s seat was comfortable and the instrument panel legible, not that we were using the speedometer very much. The center stack controls had flair, with the assorted buttons angled up on either side like chevrons. We couldn’t sure what any of them did, at lest while we were doing. Manhattan drivers aren’t known for courtesy, particularly in bumper-to-bumper, side-mirror-to-side-mirror driving conditions, and we didn’t want to send this Fiesta home dented and scarred.
What little of the steering we were able to experience suggested an overall lightness of operation, and although the Ford Fiesta soaked up most of the nastiness of Gotham’s abused roadways, “light” is the word we’d scribble into our notebook.
Realizing that another journalist would be waiting for his turn in traffic, we steered our Ford Fiesta off the Westside Highway and onto W. 42nd Street. It’s not much better. We’re backed up to the corner because we’re mired in “tunnel traffic,” cars and trucks trying to funnel into the Lincoln Tunnel. There’s a black Mitsubishi Galant with white sideswipe scratches the length its right side. We yield and it pulls ahead. Ah, the buff-colored license plate of a New Jersey driver. Figures.
The Ford Fiesta’s styling is inspired by the Ford Verve concept car, but even before that, Ford was researching the world markets, including that of North America, to develop a world car that could be adapted to local conditions.
“Style is king,” according to Ford’s Executive Director of Small Cars. “So in designing the Verve Concept – and ultimately the new Fiesta – it was a matter of judging the subtle differences in style preferences, rather than adjusting to completely separate treatments. The initial reception to the three Verve Concept vehicles said it all – the core design worked for everyone.”
Ford FiestaBut once that stylish Ford Fiesta made that right turn onto 11th Avenue and into the right lanes—tunnel traffic moved to the left—we were home free. A lucky few red lights gave us the opportunity to mash the throttle from a stop. And with three aboard, acceleration was, well, using the word “acceleration” is an exaggeration. Ford reports the Fiesta runs from zero to 62 mph (100km/h) in 13.9 seconds. We have no doubt. The 1.6-liter, not available with an automatic, can do the 0-62 mph sprint in 9.9 seconds. Not that we had that much time before turning back into the Javitts lower drive.
But will it, as they say, play in Peoria? Ford hopes it will play on the internet, having provided 100 “Fiesta Movement” Agents with a Fiesta to use their social networking abilities to spread the word. Ford says about the Agents:
· Two applicants have more than 30,000 MySpace friends
· Six applicants are YouTube personalities with more than 20,000 subscribers
· Seven applicants are bloggers with more than 100,000 views per month
· Eight applicants have more than 2,000 Facebook friends
· Twenty applicants have more than 2,000 followers on Twitter
We think the Ford Fiesta should play well with the agents. It played well with us. We just hope they don’t have to play in traffic as much as we did.

FORD FUSION HYBRID AND SATURN VUE 2-MODE HYBRID - TWO OF FIVE BEST 2009 ‘GREEN’ CARS
Green Car Journal’s “Top 5 for 2009” – the year’s best-of-the-best “green” vehicles – include Ford’s Fusion Hybrid and Saturn’s Vue 2-Mode Hybrid, both available at Galpin Motors.
“This is an exciting year for ‘green’ cars because of the many innovative and advanced models now emerging,” said Ron Cogan, editor/publisher of Green Car Journal and editor of GreenCar.com. “In fact, this year’s selection of nominees was more challenging than in years past because of the auto industry’s greater emphasis on greener vehicles.”
The Fusion Hybrid, a full hybrid vehicle, is Ford’s first hybrid sedan; Saturn’s Vue 2-Mode is GM’s first application of its two mode hybrid system in a V-6 front-drive platform.
Green Car Journal’s Green Car of the Year program recognizes new model vehicles that provide real answers for new car buyers looking for a personal stake in lessening environmental impact. This may be through substantial improvement in fuel efficiency, lower emissions, use of an alternative fuel, or an overall lower environmental load.
To qualify for award consideration, vehicles must exhibit characteristics that significantly raise the bar in environmental performance and be in production by
January 1 of the award year.
You can test drive the Fusion Hybrid at Galpin Ford in Van Nuys, and the Vue 2 Mode Hybrid at Saturn of The Valley and Saturn of Santa Clarita.

HONDA INTRODUCES ALL-NEW V-TWIN ENGINE SERIES
Courtesy: Hondanews.com
Honda introduced today an all-new generation of its popular and durable V-Twin general purpose engine. The new V-Twin, the most powerful engine series ever offered by Honda, brings a new level of value, fuel efficiency, emissions performance, versatility and quiet operation to the marketplace.
Featuring six all new models, the new V-Twin engine line offers customers more power, versatility and greater fuel economy in a more compact package. The new GX630, GX660, GX690, GXV630, GXV660 and GXV690 engines are available in both horizontal and vertical shaft configurations for a greater range of utility covering a wide range of demanding commercial, rental and turf applications.
"Our new V-Twin series of engines has been newly designed to offer more power, high fuel economy, low noise, low vibration and low exhaust emissions without the use of a catalyst." said Scott Conner, assistant vice president, Honda Engines. "The new V-Twin is an ideal fit for an increased number of potential applications that require more power, yet dictate a smaller-sized engine due to product configuration. All of these design enhancements are real advantages for our customers, as well."
Potential applications for the V-Twin series of engines include:
* Utility vehicles
* Zero-turn radius mowers
* Garden tractors
* Trenchers
* Stump grinders
* Chippers/Shredders
* Concrete saws
* Vibratory rollers
* Ride-on cement trowels
* Commercial generators
* Pressure Washers
The new V-Twin features a cutting-edge style that looks different from other engines and in concert with the 36 blade low noise resin cooling fan improves cooling efficiencies. Under the multi-faceted styling are technologically-advanced features contributing to the high efficiency and low noise and vibration. Examples of these technologically-advanced features are the hemispherical combustion chamber design, higher compression ratio, increased displacement, and steel connecting rods. Additionally, an integrated cylinder and head eliminates the need for a head gasket which results in increased cooling and higher levels of reliability.
Although fuel efficiency is a key attribute of all Honda engines, fuel consumption in the new V-Twin engine is reduced to the levels similar to fuel injected model engines of the same size. This is accomplished through the advanced combustion chamber design and implementation of Digital Capacitive Discharge Ignition (CDI) with variable ignition timing, and twin barrel inner-vent carburetion. In addition to high fuel efficiency the new V-Twin engines will meet the 2011 EPA exhaust emission regulations without the use of a catalyst.
Honda is the world's preeminent engine maker, selling more than 24 million units globally in 2008 through a diverse array of automotive, motorcycle, and power equipment products. Honda engines are characterized by the same quiet and fuel-efficient technology that is behind the company's reputation for quality.

2010 HONDA INSIGHT HYBRID MAKES WORLD DEBUT AT THE NORTH AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW
Courtesy: Hondanews.com
The all-new 2010 Honda Insight hybrid car made its world debut at the North American International Auto Show. Utilizing the latest generation of Honda’s Integrated Motor Assist™ (IMA®) hybrid technology and new, more cost-efficient production methods, the 2010 Insight defines a new stage in the evolution of hybrid technology, providing hybrid customers with a new level of affordability, fun-to-drive performance, and a U.S. EPA city/highway fuel-economy rating of 40/43 miles per gallon.
The 2010 Insight will be launched at Honda dealers throughout the United States in the beginning of April 2009 and will be priced below the Civic Hybrid.
“Honda hybrids have always offered great value, high fuel efficiency and a healthy dose of fun near the middle price range in the Honda lineup,” said John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda. “With the introduction of the all-new Insight, we’re opening up Honda’s fun-to-drive, versatile and fuel-efficient hybrid technology to an entirely new group of buyers that previously may not have considered a hybrid because of either image or cost."
Evoking the advanced and aerodynamic five-door sedan design first deployed on the revolutionary FCX Clarity fuel cell car, the new Insight has a low center of gravity and a spacious five-passenger cabin, offering the kind of driving experience and roomy, versatile interior space that customers have come to expect from Honda.
To help Insight owners realize the full benefits of Honda hybrid technology, the Insight will feature a new interactive, driver-focused fuel economy enhancement technology named the Ecological Drive Assist System (Eco Assist™). Eco Assist combines multiple functions:
* A driver-activated ECON mode that optimizes control of the continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), engine and related powertrain components to further improve vehicle fuel efficiency;
* a driver feedback function that uses an innovative speedometer display with changing background colors to provide real-time guidance to the driver on achieving higher fuel efficiency; and
* a unique fuel-economy scoring function using a plant-leaf graphic to provide feedback to the driver on current-trip driving efficiency and lifetime fuel-efficient driving performance.
All Insights are powered by an advanced 1.3-liter SOHC aluminum-alloy i-VTEC engine and CVT, along with a new generation of Honda’s IMA hybrid system for exceptional fuel economy and fun-to-drive performance.
The Insight’s IMA system incorporates a 10-kilowatt (13 hp) electric motor and a compact Intelligent Power Unit (IPU) – recapturing and storing kinetic energy from vehicle braking and deceleration and supplying additional power for acceleration when needed. Packaging of the ultra-compact IMA battery and IPU in the vehicle’s rear floor allows the enhanced utility of a 60/40 split and fold-down rear seat back.
The Insight’s IMA system has the capability to operate exclusively on electric power in certain low- to mid-speed driving conditions. It also provides for cylinder deactivation within the gasoline engine during deceleration and for engine shutoff when the vehicle is stopped. With a 10.6-gallon fuel tank, the Insight delivers an estimated maximum driving range in excess of 400 miles.
Standard safety features on all Insights include dual-stage, dual-threshold front airbags; front-side airbags with a passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS); side curtain airbag system; anti-lock brakes with electronic brake distribution (EBD); driver- and front-passenger active head restraints and a front body designed to mitigate pedestrian injuries. All new Insights also feature Honda’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure, which provides improved crash compatibility between vehicles of different size and ride height, enhancing protection for Insight occupants while reducing the potential for injury to occupants of the opposing vehicle in a frontal collision.
Additional standard features on all new Insights include 60/40 split and fold-down rear seatbacks; two-tier digital instrument panels; automatic climate control; power windows, mirrors and door locks; a tilting and telescoping steering wheel and a 160-watt AM/FM/CD audio system with MP3 audio playback, an auxiliary audio input jack and Speed-Sensitive Volume Control (SVC).
Insight EX models add alloy wheels, cruise control, 6-speaker audio system with USB audio interface, steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters, Honda Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) and an available Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System™ with Voice Recognition.
Honda is a leader in developing cleaner, more fuel-efficient vehicle technologies, including the original Honda Insight, introduced as America’s first mass-produced hybrid car in December 1999. American Honda has announced plans to increase its U.S. hybrid sales beyond the new Insight with the introduction of a third hybrid car, based on the Honda CR-Z concept vehicle, within the next couple of years. Honda is also a leader in the development of advanced alternatives to gasoline, including the zero-emission, hydrogen-powered Honda FCX Clarity fuel cell car, the world’s most advanced production automobile.

SATURN VUE 2-MODE HYBRID AND FORD FUSION HYBRID - TWO OF FIVE BEST 2009 ‘GREEN’ CARS

JAGUAR XF DOES THE DOUBLE, WINS WHAT CAR? AWARD AGAIN
By Jonathon Ramsey • Courtesty: Autoblog.com
Somebody get the record player out and put on Al Stewart, because this is turning into The Year of the Cat. The English marque just showed off the new XFR and XKR, a slightly modified XFR broke the company's speed record formerly held by the Jaguar XJ220, and chatter suggests that the automaker is working on a new supercar. On top of all that, the Jaguar XF 2.7 V6 Diesel Luxury has won the What Car? magazine award for Best Executive Sedan for the second year in a row.
The XF didn't just beat cars from its own class, it beat the best buys among executive sedans in higher and lower price brackets. The other challengers were the best sedan buy under £30,000 (around $42k USD), the BMW 520d SE, and the best buy over £35,000 (around $49k USD), the Mercedes Benz CLS 320 CDI. The Jag walked it for being "beautiful to look at, brilliant to drive, an event to be in, and worth every penny of its running costs." Which means that if the 2.7-liter could take the award two years in a row, with the new 3.0-liter coming on line this year the XF might be a good bet for the trifecta come 2010.

Jaguar, the MOST DEPENDABLE car. Really.
Courtesty: The New York Times
The New York Times may be surprised about our latest accolade, but Jaguar drivers around the world aren’t. That’s because today’s Jaguars are not just beautifully designed, high-performance cars, they’re also incredibly reliable.
Just this month Jaguar was recognized for unsurpassed dependability. Which really is no surprise considering our
commitment to intelligent design, innovative technology, and obsessive quality. Every rivet, every weld, every
moving part is checked before undergoing rigorous testing on the grueling Nürburgring. But of course, when you reinvent a car company, you don’t just reinvent the cars. You transform the whole customer service experience. And if you do this well, the world begins to notice. Over the past 12 months, Jaguar has been ranked #1 in Vehicle Dependability, #1 in Sales Satisfaction, and #1 in Customer Service by renowned organizations. Dependability. Sales Satisfaction. Service. Three things you may not immediately be thinking about when you hear the roar of a 510 hp Jaguar, but three things you’ll appreciate in the years to come. Really.

ALL-NEW MAZDA3 I-STOP, MAZDA3 MPS TO PREMIERE AT THE 2009 GENEVA MOTOR SHOW
Courtesy: Mazda.com
HIROSHIMA, Japan—Mazda Motor Corporation will debut two new models of the all-new Mazda3 (known as Mazda Axela in Japan) product range at the 2009 Geneva International Motor Show from March 3 through 15, 2009. The world premiere of the Mazda3 with i-stop, Mazda’s advanced fuel-saving start-stop system, will be shared with the all-new Mazda3 MPS, Mazda3’s high performance flagship model. The Mazda3 MPS (Mazdaspeed Axela) now features improved fuel economy and emissions that satisfy Euro Stage 5.
Mazda3 i-stop
The Mazda3 is one of Mazda’s core products, with more than two million units of the first generation produced. The design of the new model has a bolder and more dynamic stance; it is agile and confidence-inspiring, enhancing the sense of oneness between the driver and car. It also has high environmental and safety performance levels, exemplifying Mazda’s Sustainable Zoom-Zoom long-term vision to provide cars that are eco-friendly and safe while still being fun to drive.
The Mazda3 with i-stop embodies Sustainable Zoom-Zoom and adds a new eco-friendly option to the lineup. It features the i-stop system in combination with the MZR 2.0 DISI (Direct Injection Spark Ignition) engine. Together, these two Mazda proprietary technologies help the new model achieve approximately 12 percent lower fuel consumption (urban cycle) than the current European Mazda3. By providing great driving performance as well as top-class fuel economy, the Mazda3 with i-stop is a different type of eco-car that will exceed customer expectations.
Mazda3 MPS
The Mazda3 MPS sport compact pushes Mazda design further and its exciting driving performance perfectly represents Mazda’s Zoom-Zoom spirit. Carrying forward the MZR 2.3 DISI Turbo engine, Mazda3 MPS builds on the popularity and recognition of the previous model. It evolves the driving experience to an entirely new level of quality and pleasure with its emotional design and exhilarating performance.
The all-new Mazda3 Program Manager, Yoshiyuki Maeda, says, “These two models add extra value to an all-new Mazda3 lineup that has already shown strong appeal. The new Mazda3 series takes a significant step ahead in both the realms of driving performance and environmental technology to lead the way toward a new generation of motoring.”

LINCOLN MKX RANKED AS BEST SUV IN FORBES.COM'S LIST OF BEST LUXURY VEHICLES UNDER $50,000
By Jacqueline Mitchell • Courtesy: Forbes.com
Those that believe you have to spend big for a luxury car may turn up their noses at the autos on this list.
That's their loss.
Pay $37,175 for the BMW Z4 Roadster, and you can cruise around town in a two-seater roadster that allows you to automatically control the drop top while listening to your favorite tunes through a 10-speaker audio system.
Photo Gallery: Best Under-$50K Luxury Cars
The $35,605 Lincoln MKX crossover utility vehicle is loaded with standard features like heated, dual power mirrors with memory, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with genuine wood accents, and four-wheel disc brakes with an anti-lock braking system. Options include 20-inch chrome-clad wheels, a panoramic roof and a voice-activated DVD-based navigation system. The Volvo XC70, a $36,755 midsize wagon, is loaded with advanced safety features like hill descent control and full-length side curtain airbags.
To find others like them, we used data from Strategic Vision's 2007 Total Value Awards. The market research firm measures classes of cars (including reliability, warranty, strong anticipated resale value, durability, innovation, and dealership and ownership experience. Only cars that got a score of 700 out of a possible 1,000 were counted.
Vincentric, an automotive research firm, provided maintenance costs calculated over a five-year period. Vehicles with the lowest costs, which include oil changes, wheel alignments and replacement wiper blades, made the list. Finally, we capped our list at cars costing $50,000; this allowed us to measure a wide range of vehicles, from coupes to large cars.
Behind The Numbers
The under-$50,000 segment is diverse. You can find an Audi A3 wagon with a starting price of $25, 930 and a Saab 9-3 convertible beginning at $26,000. At the top end is the Land Rover SUV starting at $44,933 and the Mercedes SLK roadster with a base price of $46,000. Add in a few select options, and you can easily meet the $50,000 threshold.
There's good reason the list is long. When Nissan (nasdaq: NSANY - news - people ) (through Infiniti), Honda (nyse: HMC - news - people ) (through Acura) and Toyota (nyse: TM - news - people ) (through Lexus) in the mid-'90s introduced models for the entry-level luxury buyer, they forced other carmakers to compete. Mercedes, Benz and BMW followed suit with the C Class and 3 Series, respectively. Audi, Saab, Cadillac and Lincoln also increased their offerings.
Are these cars worth it? Weigh in. Add your thoughts in the Reader Comments section below.
Their targets? Young professionals with high-paying jobs, those in high-income households, and empty nesters who are transitioning into a luxury vehicle. They found that these buyers were making their first or second luxury vehicle purchase. Upgrading to a luxury auto means sliding into leather or plush seats, or enjoying enhanced power features like a push-button engine start, memory seating for two drivers and rolling along on larger wheels.
"You are treating yourself with these vehicles," says Stephanie Brinley, senior manager of product analysis at AutoPacific, a market research firm covering the auto industry. "It is reaching a level of maturity. You've reached a stage in your life where you want a little more luxury, and you can afford to purchase a vehicle with more amenities."
Still, there's a big difference between a $45,000 luxury car and an ultra-luxury car twice its price. Take the $86,000 Cadillac XLR convertible roadster. Its standard features include 15-spoke wheels, a V8 engine, a heated steering wheel, a high-tech navigation system and a retractable hard top. Many of these are options in the under-$50,000 group.
Instead, these cars' treats include standard features like electronic stability control or anti-lock brakes; stellar sound systems with multiple speakers; leather seats or high-quality upholstery; and a wider choice of options, like premium paint colors and electronic connections, like iPod and MP3 connectivity.
The Infiniti M35 unique African rosewood on key touch points and ultra-soft leather seats wraps you in luxury, and the Lexus IS 250 surround sound system with 14 speakers placed strategically throughout the cabin create a premium sound system that will blow you away.
But let the buyer beware. Once you cross over into the luxury segment, you may never want to drive anything else.

2009 MERCURY MILAN: SEPARATING ITSELF FROM THE CROWD
By Joe Hollingsworth • Courtesy: autoMedia.com
If life requires an economical, friendly-priced, well-equipped four-door sedan, but you'd like to stand out from the mid-size segment crowd a bit, the 2009 Mercury Milan is a definite answer. With a starting price of about $20,000 and fuel economy of up to 29 miles per gallon on the highway, the Milan may be the right car at the right time.
For 2009, Milan buyers can opt for available electronic stability control. This soon-to-be-mandatory technology helps reduce the chance that slippery pavement or an emergency maneuver will cause the car to spin out.
Power and Performance
The Milan is available with two engines. Standard is a 2.3-liter double overhead cam, 16-valve inline four-cylinder engine. It makes 160 horsepower at 6250 rpm and a peak of 156 pound-feet of torque at 4250 rpm. When mated to the standard five-speed manual transmission, the EPA says it gets 20 mpg in city driving and 29 mpg on the highway. Selecting the optional five-speed automatic costs but a single mpg on the EPA's highway rating but allows the four-cylinder to meet California's partial zero emissions vehicle (PZEV) standards.
Optional is a 3.0-liter V6 that, like the four, is a DOHC with four valves per cylinder. The six makes 221 horsepower at 6250 rpm and 205 pound-feet of torque at 4800 rpm and comes only with a six-speed automatic transmission. Especially when its impressive power is considered, fuel economy is a reasonable 18 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. Those who live or play where it snows frequently will be attracted by the optional all-wheel-drive system, which is available only with the V6 engine.
Styling and Trims
The Milan comes in two trim levels: Milan and the Milan Premier. Both can be had with either the four- or six-cylinder engine. The I-4 Premier includes the inline fourcylinder engine, 17-inch-diameter wheels, a 5-speed automatic transmission, and the Premium Sound System with 6-disc CD and MP3. The Milan V6 Premium gets the 3.0-liter V6 with a 6-speed automatic.
The Milan's exterior styling—including a satin aluminum grille and bright light-emitting diode (LED) taillamps—stands out in a parking lot crammed with Camrys. Inside, the Milan's (standard seats are cloth) on the standard front bucket seats and myriad of standard features suggests a more expensive car. The two-tone leather seating surfaces, standard on Premier models, and available mahogany interior accents certainly make the Milan's interior distinctive.
Significant Features
The Milan can quickly change roles from people mover to beast of burden for those inevitable weekend trips to the home improvement store. The rear seats fold forward in a 60/40 split, essentially expanding the already large 15.8-cubic-foot trunk capacity. For long items, the front passenger seat also folds forward. A large rear door eases access for passengers.
Notable standard features include four-wheel disc brakes and anti-lock braking system (ABS) and a six-way power adjustable driver's seat. The standard sound system has a single-CD player and six speakers. Also standard is an audio input jack. Optional is a system that features a six-disc in-dash CD player and eight speakers. SIRIUS Satellite Radio is standard on all series.
Other significant options include SYNC voice-activated communications and entertainment system for use with most cell phones and mp3 players and a power-operated moonroof. Even in the Premier trim level, with the V6 engine, all-wheel drive, premium sound system and other major options, the Milan still comes in at about $30,000.
Safety and Awards
Safety features include side airbags for the driver and front passenger and side-curtain airbags for both front and rear seat outboard occupants. In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash testing the 2009 Milan with optional electronic stability control scored the top marks in frontal and side impacts and was named a Top Safety Pick. In National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) testing, the 2009 Milan scored the top five-star rating in frontal impact testing.
The Milan, which is built in Hermosillo, Mexico, shares its chassis with the Ford Fusion and the Mazda6. The four-cylinder engine is built in Chihuahua, Mexico, while the V6 is constructed in Cleveland, Ohio.
With a low starting price, good fuel mileage, plenty of power and stand-apart styling, the 2009 Mercury Milan deserves a place at the top of your list. What more could you want?

2009 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS LS : WHEN ONLY THE GRAND WILL DO
By Joe Hollingsworth • Courtesy: autoMedia.com
Sometimes only a traditional, large, comfortable-riding, full-framed, V8-powered, six-passenger, rear-wheel drive, big North American car will do the job. It's then when the Mercury Grand Marquis LS is ready to step into the game.
Updates for 2009
For 2009, the Grand Marquis receives few changes. The differences between those intended for use by commercial enterprises and those purchased by private owners have been reduced. The GS designation has been dropped and all Grand Marquis are labeled LS.
Many Grand Marquis are employed by limousine services. These cars sometimes have the chassis stretched by aftermarket companies, but for most jobs the standard Grand Marquis is plenty spacious and luxurious. The Grand Marquis seats six and has a huge 20.6-cubic foot trunk.
Unlike most passenger vehicles and crossovers, and many sport-utility vehicles and even some pickup trucks, the Grand Marquis features the time-proven ladder-style frame. This construction is now largely limited to serious pickups and SUVs, which go off-road. As opposed to the now-common unibody chassis, vehicles with ladder frames are often more rugged.
Safety
The 2009 Mercury Grand Marquis' list of standard safety features includes traction control, anti-lock brakes, and front-seat side airbags. In crash tests conducted by the U.S. government's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the 2009 Grand Marquis earned the Fed's highest 5-Star crash test rating in all categories: driver frontal impact, front-passenger frontal impact, front-seat side impact, rearseat side impact, and rollover resistance.
Standard Equipment
Standard equipment includes the popular driver door SecuriCode™ keyless-entry keypad system. In addition, there's heated sideview mirrors to help eliminate ice and fog build up in cold weather. All Grand Marquis' have leather-trimmed seats and 6-way power driver and front-passenger seats with power lumbar and recline. Retail vehicles also get rear air suspension, rear stabilizer bar and front fog lamps. Options include 17-inch 18-spoke chrome-aluminum wheels, dual-media AM/FM stereo with cassette and single-CD player, heated front seats, power adjustable pedals, and wood and leather-trimmed steering wheel with secondary audio and climate controls.
Performance
Power for all Grand Marquis comes from a 4.6-liter single overhead cam V8 engine. It makes a peak of 224 horsepower. To provide excellent acceleration for merging onto fast-moving highways it has large torque peak of 275 pound-feet. The U.S. government rates its fuel mileage as 16 miles per gallon in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. All Grand Marquis are flexible fuel vehicles, which means their engines can safely burn a mixture of up to 85 percent ethanol. All models come with a fourspeed automatic transmission with overdrive. A 19-gallon fuel tank produces impressive cruising range.
Pricing for the Grand Marquis starts just over $29,000, including destination and delivery with fully optioned versions just under $31,000 (destination and delivery included). If you need to carry six adults in comfort, tow a big trailer, or do any number of activities, sometimes only a Mercury Grand Marquis will do.

VOLVO TAKES NEW XC60 - THE CAR THAT STOPS ITSELF - ON SECOND NATIONWIDE EXPERIENTAL TOUR
Courtesy: Volvocars.com
IRVINE, Calif. (Jan. 8, 2009) - In 2009, Volvo will give even more customers a sneak peak at its safest car ever made - the Volvo XC60 with standard City Safety - through the nationwide From Sweden with Löv Experiential Tour. The two tours will canvas the southern and western U.S. simultaneously, stopping in more than 85 cities.
For tour dates and locations, or to register to experience City Safety behind the wheel, visit http://www.volvocars.us/XC60Tour. To learn more about the XC60 from a Volvo insider and to watch video reactions of people behind the wheel when 'the car that stops itself' stops itself, visit the official XC60 blog, http://www.thecarthatstopsitself.com/.
"With the XC60, seeing is believing, and attendees to the tour stop events have been excited by the City Safety feature", said Doug Speck, President and Chief Executive Officer for Volvo Cars of North America. "Since the tour began last fall, an impressive number of customers have preordered the new XC60 which goes on sale this March."
The new XC60, Volvo's first vehicle in the Small Premium Utility segment, is a capable and charismatic crossover integrating the unmistakable versatility and safety of the Volvo brand. City Safety, the car's most important new feature, is a unique system designed to help the driver avoid or reduce low-speed impacts that are common in city traffic. If the car is about to strike the vehicle in front and the driver does not react, the car automatically applies the brakes.
According to surveys, more than 75 percent of all accidents occur at speeds below 18 mph. Volvo is involved in a dialogue with several insurance companies regarding lower insurance premiums for cars equipped with City Safety.
Customers in more than 85 cities can see the XC60 before it goes on sale during the From Sweden with Löv Experiential Tour where they will have the chance to see the new car and learn about the safety system that includes a feature allowing the car to stop itself if an accident is imminent.
The Experiential Tour events will feature a multimedia tour of Volvo's passion for safety, design and driving dynamics. The three-pronged experience, made up of kiosks, videos and timelines surround the XC60, illustrating the new design DNA and the safest Volvo in history. The experience culminates with live demonstrations of City Safety, Volvo's most comprehensive safety package ever, offered as standard. The first 25 families at each tour event will receive a special gift. During the tour stops, customers can place pre-orders for the XC60, which will be available in March 2009.
From January through March, two separate tours will canvas the country simultaneously with more than 85 tour stops in the south and west. The western tour stops include San Francisco, Los Angeles, Denver, Albuquerque, Tucson, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, Portland and Seattle. The southern tour stops include Baltimore, Washington D.C., Richmond, Winston-Salem, Charlotte, Savannah, Jacksonville, Winter Park (Florida), Miami, Atlanta, Chattanooga, Franklin (Tennessee), Nashville, Memphis, Dallas, Georgetown (Texas), Austin, San Antonio and Houston.
"Volvo is the first in the world to offer this type of feature as standard," continued Speck. "City Safety clearly signals that the new XC60 is the safest car Volvo has ever produced. The car is packed with our accumulated safety know-how and technology, both when it comes to preventing accidents and protecting all the occupants in a collision."
The new Volvo XC60 is stepping boldly into what is currently the automotive world's fastest-growing segment - dressed in a thrilling blend of muscular XC capability and the sporty charisma of a coupe. "This is not only the safest Volvo ever - it's also the most stunning," said Speck.
The "Small Premium Utility" segment is growing quickly. Within the next few years, buyers will have at least 10 crossover models to choose from. By 2009, this segment is expected to expand by 75 percent to 443,000 units.
"In order to succeed in that kind of competition, you have to create a vehicle that stands out from the crowd," said Speck. "The new XC60 bases its unique appeal on the synthesis between daringly sporty design and a range of intelligent safety systems that help the driver avoid accidents."

VOLVO XC60 STEPS UP
By Frank S. Washington • Courtesy: Aboutthatcar.com
SAN FRANCISCO -- Volvo has rolled its rims through it now.
The Swedish automaker has long been considered a producer of premium cars known for their safety and durability. Take care of your Volvo and you'll have a car for life is the cry.
Volvos were thought to be just a shade less durable and a shade less brand worthy than the prestigious iron from Germany. Not anymore. Intended or not, Volvo's new XC60 crossover is squarely in the mix with BMW's X3 and the new Mercedes-Benz GLK which just went on sale.
Pricing is $38,025 The GLK is base priced at $33,900. Common sense says you don't pay more for a Volvo than you do for a comparable Bimmer or Mercedes-Benz. However, the XC60 has a lot more equipment.
But it does make sense to pay more for a vehicle that is arguably better than both. Now, don't get it twisted, I haven't test driven either the X3 or the GLK. However, it's hard to imagine any crossover being head and shoulders better than Volvo's XC60.
Let's start with styling. The XC60 is a Volvo; you don't need to ask when you start seeing it in March. It's got the trapezoidal grille, the muscular shoulders and an enlarged iron mark badge in the middle of the grille.
The XC60 has a muscular stance that is backed up by a 3.0 liter turbocharged inline six cylinder engine that makes 281 horsepower; and 295 foot-pounds of torque at a miniscule 1,500 rpm mated to a six speed transmission. Combined with all-wheel-drive, initially this will be the only power train available in the U.S.
We drove north from Cavallo Point through the harbor at Sausalito and then west to the Pacific Coast Highway. The XC60 was better than average at low speeds. It also had very unobtrusive A pillars which enhanced sight lines.
Once we got to the PCH, we found Volvo's XC60 nimble, easy to handle and not at all challenged by the climbs along the twisting two-lane highway that lines the California coast. There was ample power, the transmission never hesitated in terms of gear selection and the all-wheel-drive system provided on the road stability.
We traveled about 100 miles up the cost to the Sea Ranch Lodge for lunch, then headed east through more Red Wood forests and then picked up U.S. 101 hwy. We encountered some ruddy surfaces on the highway and I did find the road noise rather intrusive. Other than that, about the only gripe we had was that the leather seats didn't provide a lot of grip on the twisting PCH to keep driver and passenger in place.
I thought the interior was really special. It was clean, two-toned, the materials were top notch and the light oak veneer on the floating center stack was particularly appealing. That center stack was about as flat as a flat screen TV and the oak veneer gave it an ambience that previously I've only experienced in products from luxury German automakers.
Overall, I thought the vehicle was extremely comfortable. Surprisingly, there was little driver fatigue, especially after the 100 mile ride and drive up the Pacific Coast Highway. Of course, there were other creature comforts, a twin panel glass roof was; a first for Volvo, among them.
But safety is Volvo's hallmark and the automaker lived up to its reputation with what it calls the City Safety system. At less than 9 mph, the XC60 will apply its brakes and bring itself to an abrupt stop to avoid a rear end collision. At less than 19 mph, the system will reduce speed as much as possible to lessen injuries and damage in a rear-end collision.
This is not the sort of system that encourages drivers to become lax because the XC60 will stop itself. The stop is abrupt and jarring. If anything, Volvo's XC60 encourages drivers to pay more attention as not to activate the City Safety system.
That sounds like Volvo. Develop a system that encourages safe driving and if that's not the case, the XC60 will stop itself. Look for this technology to spread through Volvo's offerings as new models come to market.
